Setting up your yard sale
You'll need:
- Signs to put out that advertise your yard sale and direct folks to it. In cities, this is often all the advertisement you need.
- Tables to hold your items off the ground. You can even use your patio furniture – just be prepared to be asked what you want for it!
- Tarps or old sheets for items like batches of used clothing that is in varying conditions and not worth pricing separately.
- Cartons or open boxes if you wish to display items inside. You can write the per-item price on the box.
- Strong rope or clothesline that you can string between trees to hang clothing, or use a rolling hanging clothing holder.
- Grocery store bags to bag your customers’ items.
- Lots of change and small bills.
- Other folks to help you, if possible. Have your garage sale in conjunction with family members or others. Agree on someone who can be a cashier for the sale. A cashier is worth his or her weight in gold! Having a cashier will free you and any other sellers to walk around your sale, answer questions, refresh inventory, and watch for shoplifters.
Having your garage sale and raking in the bucks
The day for your garage sale is here at last!! It’s time to get up early, an hour or so before your signs go out. If you’ve advertised your yard sale in advance, don’t be surprised if people are waiting before you set up. If you have a big backstock of new items, do not put them all out at one time. Place enough out to fill your space, and add your additional backstock as items are bought.
Yard sales can be a nice way not only to clean out your closet, but also to earn money to supplement your cash flow or save for your goals. Your preparation can be spread out over months, a little at a time. The garage sale is over in just a day, or a weekend. At the end of the time you can kick back, use a little of the cash to get yourself a pizza, and know that you’ll be getting another nice batch of cash in just a few months, at your next yard sale!
